Polyvagal Theory Informed Therapy
Polyvagal Theory in Therapy Practice
Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, offers a powerful lens for understanding how our nervous system shapes our emotional and behavioral responses. In therapy, this theory helps both clinicians and clients recognize how feelings of safety or threat influence our ability to connect, communicate, and heal.
At its core, Polyvagal Theory describes three states of the autonomic nervous system:
- Ventral Vagal (Social Engagement):
When clients feel safe, their nervous system supports calm, connection, and openness. This state is ideal for therapeutic work, as it allows for trust, learning, and emotional regulation. - Sympathetic (Fight or Flight):
When clients perceive danger, their bodies prepare to protect themselves-often through anxiety, agitation, or hypervigilance. Therapy can help clients notice these responses and develop strategies to manage them.
